There may be some hope for a real cure in the future, but there's none now. There's hope for a cure for Type 1 in stem cell research, but that research is difficult and slow. Expectations for a true cure (ie beta cell replacement) are set decades away.
Type 2 likewise has little expectation for a real cure. Nevertheless ongoing research and practice "in the field" does show that diabetes can be "beaten" as you put it, ie, very well controlled and the risks for heart attack, strokes, and complications (blindness, neuropathy, etc.) can be greatly lessened.
